solo show by GVIIIE (Guillermo López López)

Estampa Art Fair 2022 - 13.10.22 - 16.10.22

Guillermo López, born in Madrid in 1989, also known as GVIIIE, presents PERSONA, his latest project, made expressly for Estampa Art Fair 2022 and focused on the classic oil portrait genre, a series of works directly inspired by a meticulous selection of stolen photos from the Internet.

For this exhibition, the artist presents works that relate to the academic discipline of portraiture but from the ultra-contemporary perspective of social networks and their role in the development of contemporary individual identity. With his work, GVIIIE highlights the evolution experienced by this fundamental genre in the history of art: a pictorial genre that guarantees historical transcendence but also exists as a vehicle for divine and social propaganda. The artist brandishes the unusual moment in which the portrait is in the current context, marked by an unprecedented search for self-sublimation thanks to the global use of the now well-known photographic filters of social networks.

GVIIIE was born in the Madrid neighborhood of Prosperidad and has always been drawing. He quickly abandons drawing classes but not the instruments, which he uses in an informal and self-taught way on a daily basis. He begins to paint graffiti during adolescence. After not being selected in Fine Arts, he attends middle-grade studies at the School of Art 10 and momentarily ceases all artistic activity.

In 2013, he finishes his film studies at the University of the Arts in London. Upon his return to Madrid, he meets again with the walls and begins to develop his neo rupestrian style, producing walls almost daily. At the same time, he collaborates with the satirical newspaper Mongolia under the artistic name of Guille Joder, and his animated short film 'Abayomi' is shortlisted for the Goya Awards. In 2021 he graduates with the Master of Painting at the UPV in Bilbao.

His last three solo exhibitions at La Causa Galería, in September 2018 (Naturalezas Vivas), September 2019 (Herida Internet) and May 2022 (Presente Perfecto) had an outstanding reception by the public.
