ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
REMEMBRANZA brings together the work of five contemporary painters from different parts of the national territory. Born between the mid-80s and the mid-90s, they all share a taste for figurative painting, which they develop using their own plastic languages. The works, produced especially for the exhibition, were based on the same premise: the visual or conceptual reference to the 1990s. We asked the artists to look at those years - for some related to childhood, for others related to teenage years - and they picked up what they wanted from that time. In this way, memories emerge mainly: moments from childhood, family scenes, recognizable and inseparable objects of the time... In each image we can perceive the melancholy that almost always accompanies remembrance.
Elisa Capdevila (1994) is a painter and muralist from Barcelona. She began training in drawing and classical painting at twenty after leaving a career in the field of science. She made her first mural the following year and discovered in this artistic discipline a very powerful form of communication that caught her immediately. As an urban artist, her work is impregnated with the great interest that Capdevila shows for human subjects, such as personal relationships, intimacy and everyday life. The artist investigates these subjects through very varied images although always within a figurative perspective, paying special attention to the chromatic harmony, as well as the plastic resources of each material used.
The artist is currently focused on the realization of murals in urban art festivals or private commissions. Between travel and travel, Elisa Capdevila works on canvas from her studio located in Barcelona. On the national level she has painted murals in Barcelona, Olot, Zaragoza, Oviedo, Córdoba and Valencia, among other places; and internationally we can highlight her participation in festivals in Iceland and India. In 2019 she has been part of the Homeless collective exhibition as well as of the Juxtapoz 25th Birthday Collective Show, both in Miami, and she also exhibited in Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.
Gambin Rot (1996) is an artist born in Alicante. Graduated in Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, he is currently mastering the Master of Artistic Production at the same university. He has participated in collective exhibitions among which are eSpam (2019) in Espai Colector, in Valencia, Fem in the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (2018) or Photosynthesis in the Botanical Garden of Valencia (2019) and presented his first individual exhibition, Videncias y evidencias in the Center d'Art Urbà B-Murals of Barcelona. In 2018 he was selected for the Tuenti Urban Art Project, which led him to participate in the Urvanity urban art fair, in Madrid (2019). Last year he also won the third prize in the contest Painters of the Vega Baja, Almoradí (2018), in addition to being one of those selected in the Juan Frances, Xativa (2018) National Painting Premi.
His intense activity related to the urban environment has led him to participate in numerous events spread throughout the Spanish territory such as Gratibuey, Salamanca (2019), Murales Nau Bostik, Barcelona (2019), Q-Art, Quart de Poblet, Valencia (2018) and Ababol Festival, Zaragoza (2019), among others. In addition, he’s been recently selected by the prestigious Polinizados urban art festival, held by the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
JULIA SANTA OLALLA
Julia Santa Olalla (1985) is a plastic artist based in Granada, where she was born.
The artist investigates the ways of building the contemporary image from an intimate and suggestive perspective that intersperses with narrative strategies. Santa Olalla materializes her concerns from figurative painting, with clear influences that range from still life and photography to contemporary realism. Graduated from Alonso Cano Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada, she had several individual exhibitions in the Andalusian area. Brillo de Cuervo (2018) in collaboration with Amat Arquitectos, and Sodstory (2019) in the Palace of the Counts of Gabia, are his last two solo projects, both developed in the city where she resides.
She has participated in collective exhibitions within the national scene, such as Women Artists of Today (2018) at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona, Figurative Visions (2018), at the Juan Prado Cultural Center, in Madrid, and also outside from Spain with Homeless (2018), Pop-up residential show curated by Axel Void during Miami Art Week (United States). Among her various awards, the first prize of the Ramón Portillo International Painting Contest and the first prize of Ciutat de L'Alcora painting in Valencia stand out.
Iván Floro (1993) is an artist and muralist born in a coastal town near Barcelona called Mataró. He exercised in the drawing from an early age, but it is during the high school years when Floro begins to paint daily in factories and abandoned places. He decides not to follow a classical artistic training and in 2014 he begins to use oil painting, which he learns to handle by looking at the painting of the great masters through the screen of his computer. Shortly after, he regularly attends natural portrait sessions with more painters of the contemporary scene in Barcelona. With a pictorial style close to Impressionism, the themes discussed in his works, versatile and fresh, derive from his membership in the 90's generation.
Seriousness and irony intermingle to capture childhood memories or images of the present tinted with references to counterculture current. Among his latest exhibition projects, we can highlight his participation in the collective exhibitions Creença (2018, Berga, Barcelona), Tapia (2019, Barcelona) and Homeless (2019, Miami, United States) curated by Axel Void, as well as the Eros exhibition in painting Today (2020) at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona. Its walls are found in the Spanish territory as well as in the United States, Italy and Egypt.
Udane Juaristi (1985), also known as Udatxo, is a painter born in Azkoitia, Gipuzkoa. She studied Fine Arts in Bilbao and made a stay at L'Ecole Nationale de Beaux Arts in Paris. During her studies she learns different techniques to use them in her works and discovers, step by step, her own style. Mixing painting with collage and with the transfer technique, she has found her own recognizable language, where the urban character is the main axis of her works. This urban character has been transforming her work, until she came to paint on walls and elaborate murals on public roads. The street has always been a source of inspiration for Udane. She creates the scenes from the photographs she takes on her walks around the world, and give them life and color through painting. Her work has been exhibited in national galleries in San Sebastián, Zarautz and Lekunberry, and internationally, in Germany and France.
On the other hand, she has participated in urban art fairs and painted murals in cities such as Madrid, Zaragoza, Baiona, Lekunberry, Mauleon, Barcelona, Irun, San Sebastian, Getaria and Santander.
